Day 30 – Grateful

I can’t believe I made it to Day 30 of daily writing and posting. Time went by so fast, it seemed like an eternity when it all began on April 1st with the word Joke.

I am grateful for the month of April – for being the month where I got back to writing – for both my hands and fingers, which are the ones that allow me to type and text.

I am grateful for my laptop and the desk below it. The lamp and my eyes that give me light and allow me to see and decipher what I am writing.

Grateful for having a roof over my head, with working heater for when it’s cold and A/C for when it’s hot, and the electricity to make them work.

Grateful for having access to the Internet and to be able to stay in touch with loved ones.

Grateful for having a job and to be able to pay my bills.

Last, but not least,

Grateful to be healthy, to be alive, and to be able to feel things. To feel love, sad, depressed, anxious, hungry… Those are reminders that we are still alive.

I guess there is a reason why I did not make this list yesterday. It had to be saved for today.

And with April gone, May comes the fun. With longer days, and trees in bloom. 

We are yet, still at home… 

 

 

Day 29 – List

Day 28 – Focus

I felt really focused when going on my run this afternoon.

I was concentrated on finishing my run without stopping that I was pacing myself in a way that I didn’t want to stop, even at the traffic lights.

For me, especially, I get really focused when I am exercising or doing some type of work out. It is really hard for me to focus when I am doing something else, even writing. Right now,  I am writing and have the TV on in the background, and answering my phone when I get notifications.

I wonder why that is? When I’m working out I select playlists that I don’t know, because I don’t want to be singing along or trying to understand lyrics while I’m on the treadmill or even doing squats. It might be because I want to do it properly? In running, for example, you have to keep a consistent pace in order to complete the set time. If you run too fast or too slow, you either won’t get to your destination on time, or you might be get too tired too quickly. It really does take a lot of focus and concentration.

Any runners here?

I could be wrong, but that’s how I felt this afternoon, and the first thing I thought of when I saw the word Focus.

 

Day 25 – Magic

Describe a day in your life that felt thoroughly magical. When was it? Where and with whom were you? What made it feel that way?

Somehow the word magic or magical always takes my mind to the Harry Potter Saga because it is one of my favorite films ever!

So, there are only many places where the word magical can take me. A moment with my family over Christmas break, December ’15 (I think), Orlando, FL, Universal Studios.

I had never been to Universal before then, though all I knew was that I was going there just to go and see The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. I remember waiting in line for over an hour just to get into the ride, but I didn’t care. Hearing Hedwig’s Theme on replay was definitely priceless. There were tears of joy forming in my eyes. Such a magical moment.

After getting off the ride, we walked around browsing for wands and capes, while discussing moments from the movies and casting air spells with my brother. If magic really exists, then that is the place to go and experience it. 

That moment was truly magical because I was with my parents and brother, who are my life and we were making memories in one of the places I have been living in since I can remember- Diagon Alley and Hogwarts.

Day 20 – Music

Who doesn’t like music?

For starters, the concept of music is too broad. Are we talking about writing music? Playing music? Listening to music?

At least that’s how I see music.

I’ve been involved with music since I was born, almost. My parents were involved in their university choir where they learned how to read and understand musical keys and notes. After they graduated they kept singing with my hometown’s band and they kept doing it even after I was born. I have memories of them in choir practice while I was asleep in their laps. I was probably four or five years old, maybe…

Fast forward a couple of years, I was enrolled in a music school where I learned how to read, write and play music. The first instrument I ever learned how to play was the violin, which I found out later in life, that the violin is one of the most difficult instruments people can play. From there, I started to get interested in more instruments which is where I ended up learning how to play the piano and later on the guitar. At some point I was teaching kids how to play the piano, I was probably 13 or 14 years old.IMG_8338

But aside from knowledge, the environment where I grew up was full of creative individuals. I have aunts who love to sing and play the guitar and uncles too. My godfather is a very well known musician in my hometown. Growing up I used to go to his house every other weekend. His house is full of musical instruments like a piano, a keyboard, guitars and I think there was also a set of drums…

Today, I have all this knowledge in my head that is just waiting for me to turn on the switch and either share it, enjoy it and explore it or just let it off, hiding at the back of my brain..

I think I should probably get to work, no?

 

 

Day 19 – Three

When I saw the word of the day this morning I couldn’t think of anything to write for the word “three.” I looked around my house to see if I could find something, but nothing really came to mind. And so while I was cleaning my dishes from breakfast, I saw the three very ripe bananas and it felt like they were talking to me.

The funny thing about it was that I wanted to eat one of them yesterday and I thought and said: Nah, maybe I will bake tomorrow and will need, not only two but three bananas. The three bananas, I used to make this recipe tonight.

There really isn’t a reason why I always go back to food on my posts. But I feel like my days at home are revolving around cooking and cleaning my kitchen.

And that’s what happened! I baked banana-oat muffins with choco-chips.

There are only three main ingredients, the rest are just a “filling” IMG_8358

  • 3 smashed bananas
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 cups oatmeal
  • Vanilla
  • Baking powder
  • Baking Soda
  • Agave syrup

Mix everything in a bowl with a fork and bake at 200C for 12 minutes. You are done!

Other than using three bananas for today’s recipe, there are other things that come in three every day. For example, meals in a day – breakfast, lunch, and dinner or things to use in the shower – Shower gel, shampoo, and conditioner.

I’m sure there are many other things that girls use in the shower, but I think those are the three main ones.

Day 18 – New

New like our new way of living or new like a new object or game that we have acquired during quarantine? Well, I think I have created a new routine every week and have gotten more interested in new things if not every day, then every week.

Writing is a good example. It is not new to me, but it is definitely something I had the opportunity to get back to while being at home. It feels like an accomplishment for me to be able to get back to doing the things I like.

I have also gone back to playing music. I got a new guitar and new strings for my older one. This is not new to me, however, it’s been years since I last played a song or even grabbed my guitar. I feel like staying at home and having a lot of free time has wakened up my virtuoso side. It is certainly a good thing!

Notice that I am not adding cooking to the list. Cooking is something that I do regardless of the situation. That is the one thing I will never stop doing. For those of you who know me, know that I am cooking breakfast almost the minute after waking up. So, not putting a meal together, for me is not an option.

But anyway.. all of this to say that staying at home is not as bad as it seems. You can definitely do the things you like and not do the ones you don’t like..It’s that simple.

 

Day 15 – Scent

The smell of freshly ground coffee in the morning.. Or the smell of freshly baked cookies. Both of these scents put me in a good mood.

But hold on, I just don’t talk about food. What about the smell of clean towels? Or when you are going to wear a clean hoodie and you can still smell the fabric softener in it. Doesn’t it make you feel good? Doesn’t it give you a sense of comfort?

What about when someone walks next to you and they are wearing your favourite perfume? Or when a handsome guy or girl uses a perfume that enhances their sex appeal and makes you look back.

Totally unrelated, but what about the smell of gas ? When you are filling your car’s tank at the gas station..I hope lots of people are familiar with that smell. What about the smell of a new car? I’ve always loved that scent. Smells like plastic that has never been touched,  a clean, virgin plastic mixed with leather (sometimes) ..

Anyway, I’m rambling now…

To me, smell is one of the best senses that we can have. We are attracted to each other because of a specific scent, we are also selective of the type of food we want or like because of the smell. But aside from that, we can also recognize rotten food just by using our sense of smell.

So is it safe to safe that smelling can save our life, maybe? 

 

Day 11- Bite

I’m sure we have all spent the majority of the time during quarantine biting on something.

Yes, I am again talking about food. But, what else is there to do while you are at home?

If you are not eating right at this moment, you are probably thinking about a snack or what you are going to eat for lunch or dinner. Does that happen to everyone or am I the only one? 

I am currently sipping on my coffee and eating some strawberries. This morning I am drinking from the Nespresso Master Origin collection – Indonesia. This has been one of my favorite flavors from the beginning. The Indonesia capsule has a crisp, strong and pleasant woody aroma. It is soft to the palate while leaving that strong and aromatic coffee flavor in your mouth. The intensity of the caffeine in this capsule does not really affect the soft velvety taste, which is what I like about it. The highest intensity in Nespresso coffee is 12, this one is an 8. But what about biting? I forgot about it… I guess that caffeine is kicking in now! 

I am biting on strawberries while writing this. The coffee is done now, I finished it all while typing that last paragraph. Has anyone else tried drinking coffee and eating strawberries at the same time? It’s an interesting combination of flavors because the strawberries don’t really get rid of the coffee taste that’s in your mouth, plus the energy rush that you get while doing so. I guess it might be the caffeine plus the sugar in the strawberries? I don’t know..But I discovered this during my university years and now every time I’m in need of a pick me up, that’s what I do… that’s my secret.
